São Paulo, February 28 – Award-winning independent Brazilian virtual reality developer and publisher ARVORE is pleased to announce that its game YUKI will receive a new mixed reality expansion for free for the main gameYUKI MRcade (teaser). Thanks to the partnership with HTC VIVEthis new game mode is will present at the next festival of SXSW 2023 (booth 201, see details below). YUKI is a VR game where you use your hands and body to fight cruel enemies, mixing two very popular game genres: bullet hell and roguelike. Holding a toy action figure, you fly through the imaginary world of a child and blast your way through endless bursts of bullets through amazing settings… with YUKI MRcade, all these enemies will be right in the middle of your living room.

The new mixed reality mode takes the YUKI experience to another level. In this free update, you can bring the fantastic world of YUKI into your home, using your hands and body to fight vicious enemies in real time. Can you imagine seeing virtual portals opening in your living room and enemies emerging from the wall of your house ready to attack you? This mixed reality update introduces a completely new game mode for YUKI, with redesigned gameplay, new enemies and challenges.

«YUKI’s MRcade Mode is a dream come true for our development team. From the first day we started development in 2020, we always wanted to explore 360-degree gameplay in some way. We knew it would be a completely different experience, with new creative challenges in all aspects of the game. When we got the green light to create the Mixed Reality mode, we knew what to do, and the result is far beyond what everyone expected. It’s a whole new approach to YUKI, a new way to explore your room and your perception. I’m sure YUKI and XR players will have an amazing experience» – Kako, Creative Director of YUKI.

Top 3 challenges in creating YUKI MRcade

This mixed reality adaptation of Yuki, YUKI MRcade, has been an exciting opportunity for the ARVORE team to take on the completely new design challenges that came with translating existing VR gameplay into Mixed Reality. The ARVORE development team had to rethink and explore several areas of design to create a fun and immersive new experience that they hope players will enjoy:

Translating the Universe into MR – Staying true to the core fantasy of the game, the team kept the original theme and adapted the VR gameplay elements to suit the new elements coming from the mixed reality mode. This allowed players to immerse themselves in the game’s story, revisit familiar gameplay, and explore the world in exciting new ways. The game still had to look like YUKI VR, but adapting to the space and physical environment of each user, who was now in a new dimension of the game.

User interface – For this new mode, the user interface was completely redesigned, ensuring that players could easily understand the information on the screen while moving through the physical space. Readability and understandability were critical to the success of the game, and therefore the development team invested in a clean and intuitive interface that also had to exist and function within the mixed reality context of the user space.

Space exploration – Another major challenge was adding a new spatial dimension to the game, allowing users to play 360 degrees around their own real space. This is a big design change compared to the “on rails” design of the base YUKI VR game, and many considerations had to be made in this regard, including player safety. It was essential that players could play safely, avoiding collisions with objects and other people in the real world. Everything was designed with this in mind, from enemy positioning, fair 360 exploration, challenge building, and enemy bullet design and movement.
