Whenever you watch Anime, do you notice characters with similar personalities and attitudes towards their loved one? So you are probably familiar with the Japanese term “right“, which comes from the phrase”right right“, what does it mean “be in love“. You may recognize the five major types of dere in an Anime or Manga: deredere, tsundere, yandere, kuudere and dandere.
However, did you know that there are many more of these types of characters? Some are extensions of existing personalities that you’ve probably never heard of. Others may be interchangeable because a character may have more than one “type of right.” It’s as good a time as any to break down all the ways Anime characters express their love and affection.
deredere
- Example: Yui Yuigahama (oregairu); Clara Valac (Mairimashita! Iruma-kun.

Deredere characters are very energetic, kind and affectionate towards others. Of all the personality types, they are the most stable and tend to be the protagonists. Although they show their affection towards a loved one, they can maintain normal relationships with others.
A more refined version of the Deredere type is the “Oujodere”, which exudes a calm and collected ladylike demeanor with others. They are strict with themselves on the outside, but sweet on the inside. An extreme example of someone with strong Deredere vibes is the “Megadere,” who constantly showers her lover with praise and affection from her to an almost sick obsession.
tsundere
- Example: Taiga Aishaka (Toradora), Asuka Langley (Neon Genesis Evangelion).

If you have ever heard the phrase “It’s not like that was my intention, baka” either “It’s not like I cared about you” with a pouting face, then you are probably familiar with Tsundere. He is a cold and hostile person on the outside, but sweet and kind on the inside with the right people. It is possibly the most recognizable type of right.
The song “Hot N Cold” of Katy Perry It perfectly describes the changing nature of a Tsundere because they may be in the process of sorting out their feelings and their response to the people in their life. One day they are mean to you and the next kind of affectionate.
yandere
- Example: Yuno gasai (mirai nikki); Sato Matsuzaka (happy sugar life).

What if someone with a Deredere personality suddenly takes a dark turn? That’s basically Yandere. At first, they are very affectionate and loving towards their partner, until it becomes a constant obsession for them. This leads the Yandere to become overprotective, violent, and psychotic towards those she considers a threat to her partner’s happiness and well-being. If they feel slighted, they may also hurt their loved one to protect themselves.
dandere
- Example: Mikuru Asahina (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu); Hinata Hyuga (Naruto).

Dandere tend to be shy, quiet and asocial people in most situations. They tend to remain quiet to avoid conflict. Despite their reserved nature, these introverts will open up and show their right side when alone with the right person or group.
kuudere
- Example: Rei Ayanami (Neon Genesis Evangelion); Kanade Tachibana (Angel Beats!).

As their name suggests, the Kuudere always act calm. Even in the most stressful situations, they are always calm and collected. They never panic and tend to remain aloof and analytical to the very end. Unlike the Dandere, they rarely show affection or emotion to others in any situation, but may be hiding their true emotions in the background.
An extreme example that takes this trait further is the Shundere, who are unemotional all the time because they are sad or depressed. They rarely interact or socialize with others and hide their true emotions more deeply than a Kuudere.
bakadere
- Example: Yoshiko Hanabatake (oh girl); Yuko Yoshida (Machikado Mazoku).

Also known as the airhead, the Bakadere is clumsy, stupid, and often lacks common sense when it comes to dealing with things in her life. Her optimistic outlook helps them to be kind to others when they don’t even know it. The charm of a Bakadere character is her carefree and childlike innocence, which often makes her the target of ridicule or the object of exploitation. They can also annoy the protagonist a lot.
Mayadere
- Example: Yami (To LOVE-Ru Darkness); Juvia Lockser (Fairy Tail).

La Mayadere is usually an antagonist or deuteragonist of a series. After a situation occurs that makes them fall in love with the protagonist, they go over to his side to help him. Although they appear hostile or intimidating at first, a change of heart allows them to reveal their true feelings to the protagonist later on.
Nyandere
- Example: Black Hanekawa (Monogatari Series); Vanilla & Chocolate (Nekopara).

A Nyandere loves cats to the point that they are a part of them. They can even be real cats who always use “nyan” at the end of their sentences. A Nyandere character often adopts feline tendencies when she shows the right side of her to others through imaginary fangs or cat ears. They can also be emotionless people who show their true selves whenever they meet a feline.
Byokidere
- Example: Nagisa Furukawa (CLANNAD); Kaori Miyazono (Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso).

Byoukidere are kind and good-natured characters who are suffering from a deadly, life-threatening illness or condition. They often befriend the protagonist to give them perspective or purpose, and their impending death is often used to motivate them. In some cases, however, they are miraculously cured and spend their lives with the protagonist.
sadodere
- Example: Kurumi Tokisaki (Date A Live); Himiko Toga (Boku no Hero Academia).

The Sadodere likes to play with the feelings of the loved one and enjoys manipulating their feelings and humiliating them. They tend to be violent and cruel to others and lack the empathy to connect. Possibly her greatest pleasure is the choice to willingly inflict pain on her beloved, in contrast to a Yandere, who does it as a form of protection.
A character who enjoys tormenting or humiliating herself is a Masodere and they are masochists which complement Sadodere quite well. Characters that demonstrate both characteristics are called Sadomasodere.
hiyakasudere
- Example: Takagi (Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san); Hayase Nagatoro (Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san).

A Hiyakasudere is a character whose jokes are usually lighthearted and flirtatious. They tend to be mischievous and playful on the outside, constantly teasing their loved ones as a show of affection. Sometimes these characters may also display Tsundere or Kuudere personality traits, purposefully enjoying their lover’s annoyance.
goudere
- Example: Ikaros (Sora no Otoshimono); Tohru (Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon).

A Goudere is a person who overexerts herself, who considers her partner as her master and will do or achieve anything for him. They have a highly idealized image of her mate and will stop at nothing to please her no matter what she thinks. This can lead to hilarious and sometimes disastrous situations for the cast.
An extension of this personality trait is the Undere, which is basically the one who says yes to everything her partner orders. Regardless of the consequences, their strong devotion does not allow them to betray their loved ones so easily.
Hajidere
- Example: Kosaki Onodera (Nisekoi); Chiyo Sakura (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun).

For someone who is very shy or nervous when she is with the person she likes, the Hajidere knows how to socialize with everyone except him. She has a hard time admitting it to the person she loves and often blushes or faints when they see them take the first step.
The Bodere, which is a combination of Dandere and Tsundere, acts similar to the Jajidere. The big difference is that they lash out more aggressively against their lover than they do.
Himedere / Oujidere / Kamidere
- Example: Erina Nakiri (Shokugeki no Soma); Light Yagami (Death Note).

If you have seen the representation of “world is mine” of hatsune miku, then you are already familiar with the Himedere. This type of character sees themselves as a royal queen or princess who is constantly condescending to others. They have an intense sense of pride and demand that people attend to their every need. The male equivalent of this trait is the Oujidere, who sees himself as a royal prince or king.
The Kamidere take their narcissism to the extreme and see themselves as perfect divine beings who demand submission from people. Sometimes, however, his arrogance causes his downfall.
Hinedere
- Example: Hachiman Hikigaya (oregairu); Sasuke Uchiha (Naruto).

The arrogant Hinedere see the world through a cynical prism, and their coldness often makes them unlikable. Despite this, they hide a point of tenderness and will only open up to the right person in the right circumstances.
Nemuidere
- Example: Tanaka (Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge); Princess Syalis (Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle).

A Nemuidere is someone who is always lazy and sleepy. They like to get just enough sleep and have to be motivated by other people to do something. Darudere are equally lazy to do anything unless asked to do so by someone they really care about. These characters usually show a hidden side of power that makes them great allies.
Kanedere
- Example: Fujiko Mine (Lupine the 3rd); Nami (one piece).

Anyone who is a Kanedere is basically admitting that she is a gold digger. They only take an interest in someone based on her status and wealth, ignoring anyone else unless they can take advantage of her. However, if they meet the right person, they may learn to look beyond wealth and appreciate a person for who they really are.
kekkondere
- Example: Tsukasa Yuzaki (Tonikaku Kawaii); Boa Hancock (one piece).

Whoever believes in love at first sight and wants to get married right away is a Kekkondere. Their insistence on getting married is born from a deep desire to stay close to the person they know, for better or worse. They can be creepy and determined to the point of becoming Yanderes. Ultimately, the Kekkondere just want someone special to spend the rest of their lives with, and in time, they will find the right person.
Yottadere
- Example: Cana Alberona (Fairy Tail); Vanessa Enotaka (Black Clover).

The Yottadere are too fond of drink. They can get very angry or irritable when drunk or just fall asleep in a corner. Some Yottaderes reveal a part of themselves when drunk and often sober up when in the presence of someone they care about.
