Pope Francis returns to Hungary: three days of Apostolic Journey to Budapest in April

Vatican City – “Accepting the invitation of the civil and ecclesial authorities, Pope Francis will make an Apostolic Journey to Hungary from 28 to 30 April 2023, visiting the city of Budapest”. Thus the director of the Press Office of the Holy See announces the 41st Apostolic Journey of Pope Bergoglio abroad. Francis returns to Hungary two years after his last visit, the one he made in 2021 for the closing of the International Eucharistic Congress. A lightning visit, which lasted just over six hours (read here).

The Pontiff will leave from Fiumicino on Friday 28 April at 8 am. The arrival in the Hungarian capital is scheduled for 10 am. And after the welcoming ceremony, the courtesy visit by the President of the Republic to the “Sándor” Palace and the meeting with the prime minister. The meeting with the local authorities and civil society will then follow in the former Carmelite Monastery: here Pope Francis will deliver the first of six speeches scheduled for the three days in Budapest. In the afternoon, the meeting and speech with the Hungarian bishops, priests and religious.

Saturday the day will begin at 8.45 with a private visit to the children of the “Blessed Laszlo Batthyany-Strattmann” institute. Then the meeting with the poor and refugees at the church of St. Elizabeth of Hungary. In the afternoon, the Pontiff will see young Hungarians at the “Papp László Budapes Sportaréna”. A meeting with members of the Society of Jesus will follow in private.

On Sunday, the last day of the Apostolic Journey, the protagonist will be the Holy Mass in Kossuth Lajos square. The Pope will deliver the homily and, at the end of the celebration, the prayer of the Regina Caeli will follow. In the afternoon, before departure, a meeting with the university and cultural world at the Faculty of Computer Science and Bionic Sciences of the “Péter Pázmány” Catholic University.
