Today’s complex information technology (IT) environments are subject to a changing nature, making cybersecurity challenges increasingly complex and plentiful. The combination of a rapidly changing threat landscape, tight budgets, and limited staff is causing security leaders to look for a way to respond to threats by implementing information security strategies, such as enhancing the XDR protocol.
Extended Detection and Response (XDR) is an upgrade to Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) that integrates security and business tools while delivering higher-quality threat detection and response.
On behalf of VMware, Forrester Consulting conducted research that found that even though 75% of security leaders are in the discovery stage of their XDR adoption journey, they believe this security paradigm Security is a way to support your security tools and meet the need for better security visibility across your IT infrastructure.
In this study titled “Evolving Security Operations Capabilities: Insights into the XDR Paradigm Shift” (Evolving Security Operations Capabilities: Insights into the Paradigm Shift to XDR), Forrester Consulting interviewed 1,291 IT, network, and security decision makers around the world who are responsible for security and network strategy in organizations in North America, EMEA and Asia Pacific. The purpose was to review the status of XDR implementation, questions about this paradigm, and the next steps required for successful adoption.
Among the key findings of the study are the following:
- 45% agree that there is no clear, industry-standard definition of XDR. At least three out of four people who adopted XDR believed that it included both EDR and Network Analysis and Visibility (NAV). A third of people who are not yet users need proof that XDR is legitimate before adopting it.
- 79% of non-users said their organizations need greater speed and accuracy when it comes to threat detection and response. One of the top five reasons existing XDR users implemented XDR was for increased speed and accuracy in threat detection.
- 75% of people who implemented XDR found that their biggest business benefit is improved Return On Investment (ROI). XDR implementers also reported a 13.9% increase in ROI, and this value continues to grow as time passes since implementation.
- 83% of users agree that the automation and repeatability of XDR can complement other tools in the security technology stack. For many organizations, implementing XDR means they can keep the tools in their current technology stack and automate the heavier discovery work, saving time and money. 75%, rising to 91% among long-time users, agree that XDR allows their team to avoid some of the heavier, common, or repetitive detection engineering tasks they should do to focus on attacks more specific if they didn’t have the XDR.
Aligning priorities to make XDR a reality
In order for network and security administrators to move their organizations forward with the use of XDR, the Forrester Consulting study provided a variety of recommendations to security leaders as they adopt a more advanced XDR strategy. Among them are the following:
Implement all the fundamental components of the XDR. Fully advanced XDR offerings combine endpoint detection and response, vulnerability management, identity and access management, and visibility and network analysis. It is critically important that security teams implement technologies at their own pace, based on their organization’s priorities.
Allow employees to focus on more strategic functions. 75% of users agree that XDR allows their teams to focus on more strategic tasks and avoid more tedious ones that they would otherwise have to do without this security paradigm. Implementing XDR can improve security automation for computers.
Consolidate the commercial argument. XDR users stated that its main benefits include, among others, improved ROI, flexibility, scalability, automation opportunities, and real-time threat detection. Laying out the main organizational benefits will help further cement the business case for XDR.

Methodology
In this study, Forrester conducted an online survey of 1,291 IT, network, and security decision makers in organizations around the world to assess XDR implementation and readiness. Survey participants included decision makers responsible for network and security strategy, and the organizations they were part of. The questions were about security strategy and XDR. The study concluded in July 2022.
