Usually, the Anime franchises that are banned) in different parts of the world are due to laws or ideological differences that cannot be avoided. There are many reasons why an Anime can be banned from a country, such as violent content, sexuality content, or even depiction of themes that could only debut in that country.
There are plenty of examples of these kinds of bans leading to fans consuming them in “less legal ways.”but that ultimately result in that particular production not being able to make a profit in that country, and fifteen examples are listed below:
Shingeki no Kyojin (China)
- shingeki no kyojin is one of the most popular modern Anime. The overt violence, warlike themes and generally terrifying images have catapulted it into the hearts of many fans immediately. It is the first, but not the last, Anime banned in China. Declared too violent for children, the Chinese Ministry of Culture banned it in 2015 along with 30 other animes.

Shojo Tsubaki (Midori: The Girl with the Camellias) (Almost everyone)
- Choosing an Anime that was banned worldwide, and rightly so, is almost cheating because of the subject matter. Shojo Tsubaki tells the story of a girl of the same name who is kidnapped from a circus, where she witnesses various scenes of abuse, is abused, and other things too horrifying to repeat. You have to know that many of the tapes of this Anime have been burned or destroyed due to the traumas suffered by the public. Also, it is banned almost all over the world for its appalling content.

Kodomo no Jikan (United States)
- The Anime Kodomo no Jikan was banned in the United States, or at least heavily censored, and the Manga distributor’s license was withdrawn seven seas entertainment. It is an ecchi Anime that narrates the attempts of Rin Kokonoe, a third-year student, to make her teacher fall in love with her. Nothing more needs to be said, as it caused a controversy for months before the publisher canceled the official license after many discussions between publishers and companies.

High School DxD (New Zealand)
- Moving on to other less peculiar topics, there is a series called high school dxd. The Anime revolves around the antics of Issei Hyodo, a perverted teenager who was killed and reincarnated as a demon. New Zealand declared the series unviable for sale there, as the Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC) classified it as objectionable. According to them, high school dxd encourages and legitimizes the search for young people as viable adult sexual partners, which is why they banned it for the same reason.

Hetalia: Axis Powers (South Korea)
- For the majority, Hetalia: Axis Powers is a fun Anime that pokes fun at different countries before, during, and after World War II. However, South Korea banned the series due to the South Korean character displaying an offensive portrayal of its citizens. This led to a petition that amassed over 15,000 signatures, many protests, and death threats to the studio until the Anime was pulled. Not even the removal of the South Korean character prevented the Anime from being banned.

Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu (Australia)
- Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu is an isekai Anime in which a player is transported into a video game and has to act as a slaver to survive. The Australian Board of Classification rejected the classification of this Anime, but did not give any reason. The decision means the Anime has been banned in the country and cannot be legally sold, advertised or imported into Australia. Many fans found it confusing due to the lack of a motive, though not surprising as Australia is a very closed minded country.

Crayon Shinchan (India)
- Crayon Shinchan is the story of Shinnosuke “Shin” Nohara, a five-year-old boy, his family, and the various comedic escapades that occur in this comedy Anime. The Anime was banned in India in October 2008, following mass protests by parents and the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, due to extensive nudity and negative influence on children. The Anime resumed airing in March 2009, albeit heavily edited, following backlash from many fans.

Tokyo Ghoul (Russia)
- tokyo ghoul it consists of fighting demons and other creatures of the night with violent methods. The Russian court system in Saint Petersburg considered that all episodes of tokyo ghoul they contained cruelty, murder and violence. Furthermore, it was considered a banned Anime because teenagers could recreate those violent acts. However, many Anime fans, especially those in Russia, find this quite ironic, given the country’s violent history. Not to mention that most of the cruel acts depicted are not reproducible.

Death Note (Chinese)
- Another example of Anime banned in China is Death Note. Although the series has already been considered controversial before, in this case, the Anime was banned for numerous reasons. One of them was that the students altered the notebooks to make them look like “Death Notes” and wrote on them the names of enemies, acquaintances and teachers. Although the idea of protecting children is not a bad one, the total ban in several cities and across the country has been considered an overreach.

Pokémon (Saudi Arabia)
- In what is considered arguably the most intolerant reason to ban an Anime, Saudi Arabia has Pokemon on the banned list due to numerous conspiracy theories. In short, the entire franchise was banned for allegedly encouraging gambling and promoting Zionism, Christianity, and Freemasonry. Many of these reasons have been cited elsewhere as absurd. In addition, another of the reasons why it was supposedly banned in the country was the argument of evolution against creationism, which favored the latter.

Kinnikuman (France)
- the prequel to Ultimate Muscle is a wacky comedy about a superhero who fights against aliens, robots, and other entities in various wrestling competitions. Combining wrestling and superheroes, the stunts are often so outlandish that the Anime was banned in France. The reason is that one of the characters, Brocken Jr., had the trick of wearing a Nazi uniform. Although he wore the uniform, he did not ascribe or adhere to the same beliefs. However, this was reason enough to ban the series in France, and the character ended up disappearing from the products.

Voltes V (Philippines)
- An older Anime that was banned is Voltes Va story about a giant robot and a family fighting off alien invasions that premiered in 1978. A year later, the Anime was banned under a marital law of the former Philippine president. Ferdinand Marcos for having harmful effects on children. It was not rerun until Marcos’s removal in 1986, but the Anime returned in 1990. Despite efforts by congressmen to withdraw it, Voltes V it remained on the air until the 2010s.

To Kite (Norway)
- An Anime that was banned in Norway for violating laws on child sexual assault material is the OVA to kite, which consists of two parts. In short, the series introduces a young woman named Sawa under the tutelage of two detectives who trained her to be an assassin. What got it banned was a graphic sexual assault scene featuring said guardians and the aforementioned girl. Despite this, the Anime had a sequel with censored scenes, which was available on other sites.

Inuyashiki (Russia)
- Another Anime banned in Russia is Inyashikifrom the study MAPPA. This Anime focuses on the story of two people endowed with superhuman abilities and their different paths with their powers, where one becomes a hero and the other a villain. Other prohibited animes along with this one are Death Note, tokyo ghoul Y elfen lied. These series were banned in Russia due to the lack of age restrictions.

Shuumatsu no Valkyrie (India)
- A story about gods fighting each other is not new to fans of Anime or video games. However, some countries do not take very well to depictions of gods. An example of Anime banned in India for its theme and characters is Shuumatsu no Valkyrie. In a nutshell, the President of the Universal Society of Hinduism banned Anime and Manga for the way Shiva is portrayed, stating that the Anime trivializes the deity.
