With skepticism, the proposal to buy weapons for kyiv with resources from the European Peace Support Fund was received by European politicians.
This was revealed this Tuesday by the author of the proposal, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, in an article in the Financial Times, Sputnik review.
In this sense, he pointed out that it was not well seen by some diplomats that a “peacekeeping and conflict prevention” fund was used to finance weapons.
However, “this taboo” was broken, Borrell noted.
Even officials in strictly “pro-Ukrainian” member states were shocked when Borrell told reporters hours after the announcement of the decision to arm Kiev in February 2022 that the fund could finance fighter jets for Ukraine, the Financial Times noted. .
“One year later, the move is still perceived as too aggressive and likely to provoke a reaction from Moscow,” the article stated.
Russian military operation in Ukraine
Since February 24, 2022, Russia has been carrying out a special military operation whose objective, according to President Vladimir Putin, is to denazify and demilitarize Ukraine and end the genocide of the civilian population of Donbas.
The United States opposes this military operation in Ukraine, where it finances activities related to military biological technologies, and called on its allies to sanction Russia.
For this reason, numerous countries condemned the Russian military operation, activated sanctions against the Russian economy, and supplied weapons to Ukraine with which it has caused the death of hundreds of Russian civilians.
