Makoto Naegi, a teenager without any notable talent, is surprised to learn that he has been accepted into Hope’s Peak Private Academy: an elite school that brings together the best students from various fields. Despite believing his admission to be a fluke, Naegi is delighted to be attending an institution known for ensuring success for its graduates. Determined, he enters the front door of the prestigious academy.
However, after losing consciousness inside, Naegi wakes up in a seemingly abandoned classroom. Not understanding how she got there, Naegi begins to explore and, to her surprise, finds her classmates gathered in the gym. As everyone tries to find out what happened, they are confronted by the school principal: Monokuma, a robotic teddy bear. The mysterious toy explains that the first-year students are trapped in the school and that they have only one way to escape: kill a classmate without being discovered.
